Big Board: Defensive End

The Irish don’t have a commitment from a pass rusher. Does that change in the near future? Irish Illustrated takes a look.

CURRENT OUTLOOK

Just one defensive end departs after next season, at least in terms of exhausting his eligibility. That’s Isaac Rochell, who enters his senior year as Notre Dame’s only solid pass rusher.

Andrew Trumbetti has two seasons of eligibility remaining, but it’s not clear what the Irish have after him. Doug Randolph has already retired from football after surgery. Grant Blankenship was suspended during spring practice and his return is unclear. Jay Hayes is a defensive end for now but is built like a defensive tackle.

Daelin Hayes and Khalid Kareem are already here from the freshman class. Adetokunbo Ogundeji and Julian Okwara will arrive this summer. Can any of the four contribute right away?

WHAT’S NEXT

Notre Dame wants at least two weak-side defensive ends with pass rush ability.

After losing four-star Robert Beal in February and missing out on blue-chip prospect Joshua Kaindoh, who committed to Maryland last weekend, Notre Dame goes back to the drawing board in search of the targets to build its foundation at the position in 2017.

Here’s a look at the Watch List at defensive end.
