For Notre Dame that means the roster scatters across the country as players recharge, study abroad or tackle internships before returning next month. For Irish Illustrated, that means kicking off the second annual Notre Dame A-to-Z series as we detail that roster from Josh Adams (tomorrow) to Malik Zaire (mid-July).
What we wanted to do with the series is give insight into what might be coming for every scholarship player on the roster, including early enrollees but excluding the summer crew. We wanted to compare each player’s career to a former Irish athlete who might have been great, might have been forgettable or might have fallen somewhere in between.
Is Isaac Rochell more Anthony Weaver or Ethan Johnson? Could Quenton Nelson be the next Chris Watt? What about Notre Dame’s reserve role players? What would a good sophomore season be for Nick Coleman, Asmar Bilal or Dexter Williams? How good would Alizé Jones need to be to get on the Tight End U track? We attempt – sometimes with difficultly – to put every player in historical context.
We’ll also track how every player is holding up against their recruiting ranking. That means not just on Scout.com but across the four major services to see who got it right (or at least close to right) and who got it wrong.
On top of that, we’ll pick out the best game played by every Irish player, assuming there’s a candidate beyond the Blue-Gold Game.
It might be the real offseason, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t Notre Dame football to break down. Enjoy this year’s Notre Dame A-to-Z series.
