WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Four-star safety Jaylen Kelly-Powell wanted to earn an invite to The Opening Finals last weekend when he hit the regional camp outside Columbus.
That didn’t happen but Irish Illustrated caught up with him for an update on his recruitment.
Kelly-Powell said Notre Dame assistant coach Todd Lyght visited him at school last week and the two have developed quite a relationship.
“Most of the times we don’t talk about football,” Kelly-Powell said. “We talk about life.”
The Midwest’s No. 2 safety has another reason to keep his eye on the Irish. The 6-foot-1, 192-pound product of Cass Tech knows more than most about the Notre Dame roster.
“I like them a lot, really,” Kelly-Powell said. “Daelin Hayes and (Khalid) Kareem go there, so I go there and watch them ball out from Detroit. They tell me how it is. I talk to them. I’ve got an inside, so I know how it is. They say they love it. It’s great. It’s not too bad. It’s not really that hard. You just have to take time and put effort in.”
Kelly-Powell plans to visit Wisconsin in the near future.
