Irish to play two home night games in ‘16

The Irish will host Michigan State and Stanford at night this fall. In ‘17 the Shamrock Series is off, giving Notre Dame seven home games. The Irish will also get a bye before USC that year.

The Shamrock Series is about to be off. But home night games are absolutely on.

Notre Dame will host Michigan State (Sept. 17) and Stanford (Oct. 15) for 7:30 p.m. kickoffs this fall, giving the Irish two home night games for a second straight season. The Shamrock Series, which will go on hiatus after this season’s date with Army in San Antonio, will kick off at 3:30 p.m. eastern, a departure from its usual primetime status.

The Army game will be Notre Dame’s final Shamrock Series game for at least a year, with Notre Dame’s Campus Crossroads project to enhance the stadium prompting the University to covet a seventh home game. The $400 million project is expected to be complete before the 2017 season.

“In 2017, the first year in which we will compete in the renovated stadium, we thought it was important to maximize the opportunity for our fans to attend a home game,” said athletics director Jack Swarbrick in a statement. “We look forward to restoring the Shamrock Series tradition in 2018 and the years beyond.”

Notre Dame’s other four home games – Nevada (Sept. 10), Duke (Sept. 24), Miami (Oct. 29) and Virginia Tech (Nov. 19) – kick off at the standard 3:30 eastern time.

The Irish also formalized their 2017 schedule, which includes a bye week at the season’s mid-point after six games. That means two weeks to prepare for USC on Oct. 21.
