Ferrine has Irish High on His List

Leo Ferrine has had a very busy summer attending several camps up and down the East Coast. He also made a stop in South Bend this summer for a one day camp at Notre Dame. Did the Irish offer?

Leo Ferrine, the East Orange, NJ native (Essex Catholic HS) has been very busy this summer. Staying busy seems to be something that Ferrine likes to do. Last season, Ferrine stayed busy on and off the field. He finished his season with 55 tackles, 6 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles, and 2 fumble recoveries. Off the field, Ferrine kept up with his school work as he boasts a 3.2 GPA, and a 960 SAT score. The 6'1 175lb (4.4) cornerback is starting to get rewarded for his hard work as well. "I'm hearing from Virginia Tech, Virginia, Notre Dame, Penn State, Boston College, and Rutgers" said Ferrine. "Virginia Tech, Virginia, Penn State, and Rutgers have all offered me scholarships. I talked to Coach Simmons a couple of weeks ago, and he told me Notre Dame is strongly considering offering me too" he continued.

Ferrine went on a small tour of some schools this summer. Ferrine camped at Georgia Tech, then drove with his father to Penn State, and Notre Dame for one day camps. "I had a pretty good time at all the camps" Ferrine said. "Notre Dame's camp was a lot of fun. I think I did pretty well at the camp. There wasn't a lot to do in South Bend, but me and my dad went to the College Football Hall of Fame. That was real cool. I also got a tour of the campus and that was great. It's a really small school which is good for me because I don't really like to be around a lot of people all of the time."

While he was in South Bend, did he have a chance to talk to Coach Tyrone Willingham? "Yes! I got an opportunity to have a one on one conversation with Coach Willingham. He was a great guy. He reminded me a lot of my father. In fact, Coach Willingham and my father basically grew up in the same area. They know a lot of the same people which is pretty cool. They really relate to each other, and I can really relate to Coach Willingham." Ferrine said.

What are the main things Ferrine will focus on when deciding on a school? "Tradition, and Education will be the main factors when I decide. I'm not planning on deciding any time soon though. Honestly, it's not something that's on my mind at this point. I'm planning on taking all five of my visits, and decide in February.

Comments: Ferrine really likes Notre Dame. He was really trying to play it cool, and had to catch himself from sounding too happy about Notre Dame. The Irish are already one of the teams at the top of his list, and will solidify their spot there is they decide to offer. He want's to go to a school with a great tradition and great education. Notre Dame fits the bill. He's also a Catholic school student and traditionally that's been a plus. This one will play out for a while. IrishEyes will check back in with Ferrine during the season to find out what schools he will visit, and to see if things change.
