Big Board: Safety

Notre Dame’s recruiting board at safety consists of high-profile targets. Irish Illustrated explains which ones are reciprocating interest in the Irish as the summer season approaches.

CURRENT OUTLOOK

Notre Dame has just four returning safeties this season in sixth-year graduate transfer Avery Sebastian, senior Max Redfield, junior Drue Tranquill and sophomore Nicco Fertitta.

Sebastian and Tranquill took medical red-shirts last season.

Redfield started the past two seasons but at times surrendered his starting position to Tranquill and former Irish defensive back Matthias Farley.

Now mid-year enrollee Devin Studstill is next to challenge for Redfield’s starting spot.

WHAT’S NEXT

Notre Dame signed seven defensive backs last cycle, but 6-foot-2, 190-pound strong safety D.J. Morgan has promising potential to transition to linebacker early in his career.

As for the other freshmen, Studstill (free safety), Jalen Elliott (free safety) and Spencer Perry (strong safety/Sam linebacker) are expected to play this fall. Perry was also a mid-year enrollee.

Donte Vaughn projects at cornerback but could receive reps at safety.  Likewise, Elliott could cross-train at cornerback.

Notre Dame picked up a commitment from safety Isaiah Robertson of Naperville (Ill.) Neuqua Valley less than two weeks after the Irish offered in April.

Robertson is ranked as a four-star wide receiver, but Notre Dame likes the 6-foot-3, 190-pound prospect as a safety. Robertson committed to the Irish over a top six that included Illinois, Iowa, Penn State, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin.

Notre Dame would like to sign one or two more safeties in 2017.

Here’s a look at the Watch List.
