One of Notre Dame’s top offensive targets will announce his commitment on July 8 at The Opening.
Scout 300 four-star athlete C.J. Holmes will choose among seven finalists: Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Syracuse, Tennessee and UCLA.
Holmes, the nation’s 15th-ranked athlete, is being recruited by Notre Dame to play multiple roles on offense at running back and slot receiver.
Holmes took his most recent visit to Notre Dame in June for Irish Invasion.
The Notre Dame coaching staff made an impression on the Cheshire Academy (Conn.) product and his mother during their three-night visit in Notre Dame.
“Coach (Brian) Kelly and coach (Mike) Denbrock were both excellent and coach Autry Denson,” Holmes said. “We really hit it off. They had great energy and did a thorough job at displaying their wanting for me to call South Bend home.”
A couple Notre Dame commitments also did their part.
“Avery Davis and Jordan Pouncey were really on me,” Holmes said.
Following his visit, Holmes told Irish Illustrated he almost committed to Notre Dame while on campus.
“I would be lying if I said I didn’t think about committing,” Holmes said. “Through various meetings and presentations, Notre Dame made it very clear that they offer the best of both worlds on and off the field. And that made a very heavy impression on me.”
Irish offensive line target Robert Hainsey of Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy is also expected to announce a commitment at The Opening, with Notre Dame in strong position. Michigan and Michigan State are the other finalists.
Holmes’ high school teammate, four-star wide receiver Tarik Black, is predicted to publicly announce his commitment to Notre Dame in January at the Army All-American Bowl.
Notre Dame’s 2017 class is currently ranked No. 5 nationally with 13 commitments.
