Notre Dame immediately entered contention as one of Chris Whittaker’s top schools when the Irish offered the three-star defensive end back in June. Whittaker told Scout he considered the Irish his “dream school” upon adding a Notre Dame offer.
It seemed the Irish could snag a commitment from the 6-foot-3 ½, 250-pound athlete this summer if he made it to campus.
“Just because of travel reasons, I wasn’t able to get up there this summer,” Whittaker said. “It just didn’t work out.”
The Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade College Prep defensive standout released a top six that included Notre Dame last week.
However, the Irish now have some ground to make up to overcome other schools on the list, like Kentucky and South Carolina.
“I’m not quite sure I’ll visit Notre Dame,” Whittaker said. “The only coach I talk to is coach Autry Denson. I think I’m going to talk to him about (a visit) later on in the week. I would like to be more involved with the coaches on defense.”
Whittaker plans to make a decision later in the season following his official visits.
“Definitely I’m going to visit South Carolina, Kentucky, Georgia Tech, USF and UCF,” Whittaker said. “I’m definitely looking at the whole involvement the coaching staff has in welcoming me, like how Kentucky and South Carolina have been.”
