Jeff Schweiger Jr., the dominating defensive end from San Jose, CA., is all about competing and winning and after making a major impression with college coaches this summer at the west coast Nike camp, where he showed off his 25 lbs. of muscle that was added to his 240 lb frame, ran a 4.56-40, 4.11 shuttle and took defensive MVP, he is currently focusing on helping his team win back to back CIF Championships. Irish Eyes was fortunate to catch up with him and his father to get an update on his senior season and where he is at in the recruiting practice.

While receiving 8-10 letters a day from Division I colleges all over the United States, Jeff has finally narrowed down his college choices. "He's looking at five schools. Notre Dame being one of them," Jeff Schweiger Sr. said as we spoke when Jeff was in the gym late at night, lifting weights after a grueling day of two-a-days for his high school football team. "Miami, Michigan, Oklahoma, and USC."

With his focus on the upcoming season, Jeff is in no hurry to make any type of commitment. "He plans to make at least four or five trips. He hasn't seen any other school except USC. But he'd like to take his visits and see what they have to offer: facilities, campus, all of those, plus a tremendous consideration for football."

Not only is there genuine interest in Notre Dame, but when thoughts of the Fighting Irish came up, the conversation turned into a family affair. "Oh, he loves Notre Dame tradition. I was actually recruited by Notre Dame back in 1975, when Dan Devine was the head coach…. That's why they're in the top five, because of their tradition. He knows the chance to win the national championship is there, the exposure is there, but it's one of the top programs in the country. That's why he's narrowed it down and kept Notre Dame aside"

Finally getting a hold of Jeff the next morning, Irish Eyes asked if he had any leaders at this point in the recruiting process. "I think probably the leaders are USC, Notre Dame, and Miami, Jeff Jr. said during breakfast.

Rather then trying to make a decision on his college, Jeff is focusing on his senior year with some lofty goals. "We started double days last week and this Friday is our last double day. Then school starts on Monday, so I'm really excited. Looks like we're gonna have a better team this year. Last year, we won CIF… I wanna try to get 20 sacks and 150 tackles."

Comments: Jeff Schweiger Jr. is everything that he is built to be. A winner. I was lucky to catch him the next morning during breakfast. He wasn't home the night before because he was in the gym lifting after grueling double days that started last week. He is all business and fortunately for the Irish, he is still far from making a decision. With a definite visit to Notre Dame to be scheduled, it should be a close and great race for this defensive end prospect.
