Beyond the Numbers: Irish Quarterly Report

A look at the numbers of note for Notre Dame at the season’s quarter point.

Tackles impact the game to varied degrees, and as such, Irish Illustrated began to track its self-appointed “Stuff” statistic since the beginning of the 2014 season. The metric measures all tackles for loss (including sacks) plus gains of 0, 1, and 2 yards that don’t result in an opponent’s first down.

Nyles Morgan 11.5
Isaac Rochell 10.5
James Onwualu 8.5
Drue Tranquill 6.5
Te’von Coney 6
Daniel Cage 3.5
Jerry Tillery 3.5
Jarron Jones 4.5
Cole Luke 2
Avery Sebastian 2
Jonathan Bonner 1.5
Greer Martini 1.5
Daelin Hayes 1.5
-- Nick Coleman, Jalen Elliott, Jay Hayes, Asmar Bilal, Devin Studstill, Julian Love, Julian Okwara, Shaun Crawford, and Andrew Trumbetti have each either recorded or contributed to one Stuff

It goes both ways. Through four contests, Notre Dame ball carriers have been Stuffed on 51 of 154 carries (plus two screen passes), or 32.6 percent of the time. Last season through four contests, Notre Dame ball carriers were Stuffed on 31.3 percent.

These Irish defenders made a play that ended an opponent’s drive on either 3rd- or 4th-down, either due to a QB pressure, pass defended, tackle prior to the sticks, or merely a coverage win against a pass.

Some programs track “Chunk Gains” as 20-plus yards gained through the air or 15 via the rush. We break it down as such:

Gains of 10-19 Yards
Must result in first downs if the play occurs on third down. Also includes any pass interferences drawn (as they’re +15 for the offense)

Josh Adams 9
Equanimeous St. Brown 9
Torii Hunter, Jr. 7
DeShone Kizer 5
Durham Smythe 2
-- Dexter Williams, Chris Finke, Tarean Folston, C.J. Sanders, and Corey Holmes with one apiece

Gains of 20-29 yards
Sanders 4
Stepherson 3

St. Brown 2 (had two others erased by penalty)
-- Boykin, Hunter, Williams with one apiece

Gains of 30 yards or more
St. Brown 4
Sanders 2

Kevin Stepherson 12
Josh Adams 10
Durham Smythe 5
Chris Finke 5 (all against Nevada)
Chase Claypool 4

Corey Holmes 2 (both resulted in first downs)
-- Nic Weishar, Javon McKinley, Tarean Folston and DeShone Kizer have each been targeted once.
