Beyond the Numbers

A look at the numbers of note for Notre Dame as it prepares to take on Miami.

THE RIGHT STUFF
Tackles impact the game to varied degrees, and as such, Irish Illustrated began to track its self-appointed “Stuff” statistic since the beginning of the 2014 season. The metric measures all tackles for loss (including sacks) plus gains of 0, 1, and 2 yards that don’t result in an opponent’s first down.

  • Nyles Morgan 16 (zero against Stanford)
  • Isaac Rochell 16
  • James Onwualu 15 including 6.5 over the last three outings
  • Drue Tranquill 12 including a team-best 3 vs. Stanford
  • Jerry Tillery 9 with exactly half occurring against N.C. State
  • Te’von Coney 9
  • Daniel Cage 6.5 (does not include a Stuff negated by a Stanford holding call)
  • Jarron Jones 6 including a sack, FF, FR on one pay vs. the Cardinal

GETTING STUFFED
It goes both ways. Through seven contests, Notre Dame ball carriers and quarterback DeShone Kizer have been Stuffed of sacked on 105 of 264 rushes (plus three passes behind scrimmage), or 39.3 percent of the time.

A whopping 54 of those 105 Stuffs have occurred over the last three outings.
