Snap Judgments: Virginia Tech @ Notre Dame

Notre Dame could do absolutely nothing in the second half offensively after establishing a 600-yard pace in the first half.

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – No answers. Zero. None.

After netting 299 yards total offense in the first half – 100 rushing and 199 passing – Notre Dame’s offense might as well have stayed in the locker room during the third and fourth quarters because all they did was take up space on the field.

And not very much of that…or time, for that matter.

Notre Dame possessed the football eight times in the second half. Six drives ended in three-and-outs. One ended the game nowhere close to the end zone. The other ended in a mistake – by Virginia Tech – as Josh Adams burst for a 67-yard score.

In the second half, Notre Dame ran 29 plays. One went for the aforementioned 67 yards. The other 28 accounted for 83 yards. That’s less than three yards per snap.

After controlling the football for 12:29 in the first quarter, the Irish had the football just 14:46 of the final 45 minutes of the game.

After the game, Brian Kelly said he’d have to see the film to recognize exactly how Bud Foster’s defense adjusted to the Irish after the first half. Unfortunately, no video was provided on the Irish sideline, and thus, six-of-eight drives ended in three-and-outs and Notre Dame’s 34-31 loss was its seventh of the season.

CHAIN GANG

So much for staying ahead of the chains -- at least in the first half -- as a key to Notre Dame’s offensive success against Virginia Tech. The Irish shot to a 17-0 lead by overcoming:

• a 1st-and-15 and 3rd-and-10 on its first touchdown;
• a 3rd-and-15 on its field-goal drive
• a 1st-and-17 on its third touchdown.

The Irish made it look easy against a team that came into the game with the No. 5 third-down defense and the No. 6 defense in tackles for loss. The Hokies ultimately would come up with seven stops behind the line, including one sack, most of which came in the second half.

The Irish were behind the chains the entire second half. After converting 3-of-7 on third down and 1-of-1 on fourth down in the first half, it all fell apart. Notre Dame converted just 1-of-7 on third down in the second half, which explained the five punts in the first six drives after the intermission.

In the second half, even when the Irish faced some manageable conversions, they:
were:

• 3rd-and-4 (incomplete);
• 3rd-and-16 (three-yard scramble);
• 3rd-and-14 (incomplete);
• 3rd-and-4 (drop);
• 3rd-and-13 (sack);
• 3rd-and-5 (incomplete).

By scoring two touchdowns and a field goal on its first three drives of the game, Notre Dame had scored on 19 of its previous 22 drives. After making it 20-of-24, they scored just once on their final eight possessions.

KIZER’S ND STADIUM FAREWELL?

Using the phrase “let’s be real” to summarize his options and the possibilities that potentially await him on the next level, DeShone Kizer likely has made his final appearance in Notre Dame Stadium.

Whether he’s “ready for the NFL” or not, the fact is he has the size, the intelligence and the physical tools to be one of the top three quarterbacks selected in the draft, if not the first.

He hasn’t played to that level, but that matters little in today’s professional game. They look at the measurables, the makeup and the moxie, and if he has those assets, they figure they can take the prospect the rest of the way to stardom.

Kizer was brilliant in the first quarter, completing 6-of-7 for 103 yards, leading a touchdown and field goal drive before tossing a 31-yard touchdown pass to Chris Finke on the first play of the second quarter.

At that point, Kizer was 7-of-8 for 134 yards and a touchdown. The rest of the way, he was 9-of-25 for 101 yards and a touchdown. That’s not the way he wanted to go out, but out he almost undoubtedly goes.

SENIOR RESPECT

I’ve been covering Notre Dame football professionally spanning six head football coaches. I’ve seen a ton of outstanding young men who make you proud to call this place your alma mater.

There are not three finer individuals and leaders than defensive lineman Isaac Rochell, linebacker James Onwualu and offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey. Rochell and Onwualu will be gone; McGlinchey assured once again that he’ll be returning for his fifth year.

Unfortunately, they’ll likely have a 4-8 record hanging around their necks for all of eternity as captains of the 2016 squad. Irish fans should be upset with the way this season has turned out. Go ahead and be mad the head coach and his staff. But those three – and several others – deserve respect for the people and leaders that they are.

They have been amazing in times of real despair.

WINDS OF CHANGE

With temperatures in the 40s and the promise of 25-mile-per-hour winds, one would have thought that scoring would have been at a premium against the gale force winds in Notre Dame Stadium.

Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente noted after the game that the wind was a factor in the kicking game but not the passing game.

The numbers bore that out. Of the 52 points scored in the first three quarters, the team moving the football against the wind tallied 31. Virginia Tech scored 21 of is first 24 points against the wind while Notre Dame scored 10 of its first 17 into the wind.

It finally played true to form in the fourth quarter when all of Virginia Tech’s points (a touchdown and two field goals) were with the wind as Notre Dame was shutout.

ODDS AND END(ZONES)

• Virginia Tech allowed 29 points in the first quarter through 10 games; Notre Dame scored 10 points in the first quarter and another seven on the first play of the second quarter.

• What purpose do the rules serve for targeting/protecting the quarterback if the hit on DeShone Kizer is not a penalty? And speaking of bad penalties – this one even worse than the no-targeting penalty on the Kizer hit – the interference against Cole Luke on Virginia Tech’s game-tying touchdown was the most egregious case of offensive interference there can be, and it went against Luke.

• The Irish defense fell apart in the second half because the Notre Dame offense couldn’t stay on the field. But they did hold the Hokies to three touchdowns on five red-zone entries, which was in line with Virginia Tech’s No. 97 ranking (56.8 percent). As poorly as the defense played in the second half – allowing 284 yards and 20 points – they gave the offense a chance to win the game by being stout in the red zone.
