Prister’s Key Three: Iowa @ Notre Dame

After an uncharacteristic 11 first-half turnovers, Irish take care of the basketball and get back into offensive rhythm in 92-78 victory over Iowa in ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

THE STORM BEFORE THE CALM

What looked like another blowout for youth-dominated Iowa – the Hawkeyes lost by 31 points while scoring just 41 last Friday – turned into an unexpected battle before halftime of Notre Dame’s 92-78 victory in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge at Purcell Pavilion Tuesday night.

Notre Dame (7-0) built a 41-26 lead with 3:25 left in the first half. That’s when the Irish stopped playing quality basketball and Fran McCaffrey’s Hawkeyes went on a 13-0 run.

Walking from the Notre Dame bench to the Irish locker room gave head coach Mike Brey plenty of time to gather his emotions before releasing them on his players.

“I got on them a little bit,” said Brey as the Irish took a slim 41-39 lead into the break. “I said, ‘I don’t understand. We can’t even make an entry pass on that last set.’ We just threw it away, and I got on them about that.

“But you try to remind them that you’re not going to beat a Big Ten team in the first half. You’re not. They’re going to make a run. They’re a gifted offensive team. We had to get off to a good start in the second half.”

While the Irish scored the first four points of the second half, Iowa responded and forced 10 lead changes in the game, including a 52-50 advantage with 15 minutes remaining. The Irish then went on 8-0 and 12-4 runs over the next 10 minutes to once again ease away from the Hawkeyes (3-4).

“Turnovers, way too many turnovers, especially for me,” said junior point guard Matt Farrell, who came into the game with a 32-to-7 assist-to-turnover ratio before committing three of Notre Dame’s 11 first-half miscues.

“We can’t do that. We’ve got to be better with the ball. That was good for us to be in that game situation. We had to come in at the half and regroup. We made adjustments, and in the second half, we took better care of the ball, we screened better and we played better defense.”

In a rare statistical anomaly, the Irish ended up with more turnovers (14) than assists (11). But in the second half, Notre Dame coughed it up just three more times, made 9-of-16 shots from two-point range, and 6-of-15 from three-point land to out-score the Hawkeyes, 51-39.

“They got too many offensive rebounds,” said Steve Vasturia of Iowa’s nine caroms in the first half. “They kicked those out for threes and good teams are going to make open threes. So that’s where we needed to adjust and focus in the second half, being better on the glass.

“We were also a little stagnant offensively in the first half, even though we scored 41 points. We took some bad shots and we weren’t ourselves. Getting back into a rhythm started on the defensive end.”

The Irish leaned on Vasturia, Bonzie Colson, V.J. Beachem and Farrell in the second half as Brey reduced the number of minutes for off-the-bench players in favor of his established four. Each scored in double figures in the second half and 49 of Notre Dame’s 51 points.

“The way we defended,” said Beachem – who scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half – of Notre Dame’s revival. “We did a lot of standing in the first half and didn’t move without the ball. But in the second half, we were moving the ball, cutting, and really took care of the ball.”

When all was said and done, the way the game ultimately transpired should prove beneficial to the Irish.

“It was good to have some game pressure in our house for the first time, and I think we handled it great,” Beachem said. “The way we played in the second half – making a run to really separate ourselves again – and then not letting them come back…That was really great for us.”

COLSON IN CONTROL

A star is rising at Notre Dame. Well, actually several stars, but none are shining as bright as 6-foot-5 junior Bonzie Colson, who finished with 24 points and a career-high 17 rebounds, including 15 of those points in the second half.

Colson established himself from the outset of the second half, nailing a short turn-around jumper 14 seconds in and converting a pair of free throws 34 seconds later. He connected on all 12 of his free throws for the game, raising his season mark to an astonishing 40-of-44 (90.9 percent). Colson was a 76.7 percent free-throw shooter during his freshman and sophomore seasons.

“He’s is the ultimate warrior,” Brey said. “He’s a great competitor. There’s an edge about him. He gives you confidence. He gives his teammates great confidence, kind of like the first time I threw him in a game in Atlanta, Ga. (as a freshman in 2014-15) when he had the old guys believing we could win on the road.

“He was fabulous. There’s a great edge about him. As far as getting balls off the backboard, both offensively and defensively rebounds, it’s clinic type stuff.”

Colson snared six of Notre Dame’s 11 offensive rebounds for the game.

“I’m just trying to play hard, play strong and trying to lead as best as I can,” said Colson, who is averaging 18.1 points and 10.7 rebounds per game. “This is a great team win for us. We knew we were going to have to fight. We just stayed together through adversity. We’ve been there before when teams have punched us.”

Nobody packs a punch quite like Colson. He’s now strung together four straight double-doubles with rebound totals of 12 (Colorado), 11 (Northwestern), 11 (Chicago State) and the career-high 17 against the Hawkeyes.

Colson also sparked the Irish at the free throw line, leading the charge for the team’s 30-of-33 night, which had Notre Dame ranked fourth in the country coming into the game. The Irish are now shooting 84.4 percent from the line as Colson, Beachem, Vasturia and Farrell were a perfect 25-of-25 against the Hawkeyes.

“It’s an unbelievable weapon,” said Brey of Notre Dame’s free-throw shooting prowess. “When we get to the bonus, we start driving it a little more. We had a couple key free throws on just strong rebounds. It’s a heckuva way to build in a game when maybe we’re not shooting (from the field) as well.”

CLAMPING DOWN

Iowa senior Peter Jok – averaging 25.3 points per game on a team with just two double-digit scorers – tossed in 42 points in Iowa’s Saturday loss to Memphis.

The Irish knew if they could contain Jok, the rest should fall into place. They didn’t anticipate freshman Jordan Bohannon, with a career-high of just six points through the first six games, tossing in 7-of-15 from three-point range and finishing with 23 points.  But checking Jok was priority No. 1.

Notre Dame held Jok to 4-of-20 shooting, including 2-of-11 from three-point range. He even missed a couple of free throws after converting all 24 in the previous six games.

“The goal for us was to chase him into tough shots and making him take contested twos because he’s a great player and can really score the ball,” said Vasturia, who tag-teamed with Rex Pflueger to make Jok’s night uncomfortable.

Jok scored just six points in the second half and finished with 15, well under his season average.

“It was really a group effort,” Vasturia said. “Rex did a great job.”

Brey has a secret weapon in Pflueger, who logged 24 minutes, 14 of which came in the second half.

“Rex Pflueger was fabulous tonight,” Brey said. “He really was chasing Jok most of the night. That is such a luxury to have that guy come in, know who he is, and guard like a son-of-a-gun, which frees Steve up to do the offensive stuff that he did and take over the game when he needed to.

“(Pflueger and Vasturia) were really good with their routes. They made (Jok) a two-point shooter for the most part. They made him put it on the floor. Our bigs did a good job helping, too. It was a team awareness. But when you have Rex Pflueger dogging you, it’s exhausting when he’s working you.”
