Irish offer junior backer with Elko link

Payton Wilson became the third North Carolina junior linebacker to land a Notre Dame offer on Wednesday. Wilson had previously been recruited by Irish defensive coordinator Mike Elko during his time at Wake Forest.

Mike Elko returned to his former stomping grounds on Wednesday to offer three North Carolina linebackers. Notre Dame’s new defensive coordinator, who held the same position at Wake Forest from 2014-2016, knows what the Irish could be getting down there thanks to that in-state experience.

The first was Dax Hollifield from Shelby, N.C. Greensboro’s Alan Tisdale reported an offer a short time later. Payton Wilson, a 6-foot-4, 210-pounder from Hillsborough, N.C., rounded out the trio.

Wilson was one of the first junior prospects to hear from Elko following his move to South Bend.

“He just told me he got the job and was looking forward to recruiting me,” Wilson told Irish Illustrated in January.

Wilson already holds offers from several of college football’s premier programs including Alabama and Ohio State. North Carolina, N.C. State, Michigan State, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest are also on his offer list.

“Wilson is a big-time athlete who can really run,” said Southeast Analyst Michael Clark. “He is effective against the run and pass. Wilson plays sideline to sideline and takes good pursuit angles. He closes quickly on the ball and is a big hitter.” Top Stories
