Heygood Taking Things in Stride

Sometimes things happen during the course of the year that remain out of your control. How you deal with those things can determine the type of person you are. Heygood spoke with IrishEyes about football, recruiting, and the possible postponement of his season.

Anthony Heygood, the 6'1 210lb bruising running back from Cardinal O'Hara HS in Springfield PA is no stranger to adversity. Last season, Heygood tore his MCL and had to sit out a few games. He still managed to rush for almost 900 yards, and 12 TD's. He is one of the top players in the Philadelphia Catholic League this season. A season which may be shortened because of disputes from the teacher's union.

"Our teachers are on strike right now" said Heygood. "We've still be practicing to play Penn Charter this weekend, but I don't know if things will change with that or not. I think we'll get to play this game, but I don't know about next week's if things don't get resolved."

One would think Heygood would be a little bitter since he could possibly be missing some of his senior season because of the strike. That is not the case however. "I understand what they're doing. They (the teachers) have to do what they have to do to be treated fairly. I'd be a little dissappointed if we had to miss some games, but I understand what the teachers are doing."

Aside from the distractions of the teacher strike, Heygood is trying to stay focused on his senior season. He will take a few visits during his season though. "I haven't set up any visits yet. I need to start doing that. I want to take a few visits during the year so I can see the school on gameday. I want to see the gameday atmosphere. Hopefuly I'll get to check out some really good games too."

What school's are Heygood currently considering? "My top 5 are Wisconsin, Notre Dame, Boston College, West Virginia and Pitt. The coaches from Boston College and West Virginia have been calling me the last couple of days. As a matter of fact, I have to call the West Virginia coaches back after I get off the phone with you.

Heygood has a tough year ahead of him. He's dealt with adversity before, and should have no problem dealing with it this season.

Comments: Heygood likes Notre Dame a great deal. He camped at Notre Dame over the summer but left without an offer. Perhaps the coaches want to see him in a few games before they offer. This is where the strike would hurt him. If he can't play early, it may cost him a few scholarship offers. Notre Dame could have a few prospects rated higher than Heygood as well. Right now I think Wisconsin and BC are leading. If Notre Dame offers, look for them to jump in the driver's seat.
