Class of 2018
Position: Outside linebacker
Top Offers: Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Ohio State
Pass rushers are always at a premium. Chatfield turned in a stellar performance at The Opening Regional in Miami, taking home defensive line MVP honors and earning an invitation to The Opening Finals later this summer. Chatfield showed multiple moves but few better than a pure speed rush. Offensive tackles could hardly get a hand on Chatfield as he beat them to the edge and found his way to the quarterback. Notre Dame needs more prospects with an ability to win clean at the line of scrimmage then track down the quarterback for a sack. Chatfield looks to fit the bill.
“Every school is wide open with me. Whatever new school wants to offer me anything, I am always open. I am always checking everything out.” - Chatfield, earlier this month
Chatfield listed LSU, Wisconsin and Oregon as the programs recruiting him hardest at The Opening Regional in Miami. LSU is one of his best offers at this stage and could lead. But Chatfield mentioned wanting to take visits to Notre Dame (before the offer), Alabama, Michigan and Michigan State along with the trio of top contenders. Look for him to narrow the field this summer. Chatfield plays at Florida powerhouse American Heritage, where he’s teammates with wide receiver target Anthony Schwartz. Former Irish linebacker Michael Deeb came through American Heritage.
Autry Denson, Mike Elston
Four. Notre Dame already has commitments from Jayson and Justin Ademilola on the defensive line, leaving a couple more spots for legitimate pass rushers. News leaked out last weekend that four-star defensive end Malik Vann is no longer part of the plan, which says something about where the position is headed. Defensive coordinator Mike Elko and defensive line coach Mike Elston are seeking lean, speedy pass rushers. Chatfield is in that mold, so the offer makes sense.
