Irish tracking three-star linebacker

Richmond (Virginia) Benedictine outside linebacker Wendell Davis has been climbing up boards lately. The three-star talent has been receiving attention from the Notre Dame staff and is eyeing a summer visit.

The Irish have at least one linebacker spot left to fill.

With Dallas Gant’s decision in limbo until May 16, staff at Notre Dame have expanded their search to add more outside linebackers to their offer list.

So far, outside of four-star commitment Ovie Oghoufo, the Irish have offered seven athletes they feel fit that position. Alan Tisdale, Eli’jah Winston and Channing Tindall are three who have shown that the interest is mutual.

Wendell Davis, who proves his refined skill set and explosive playmaking ability in his junior season Hudl highlight film, has collected 15 offers so far, including Duke, Pittsburgh, Virginia Tech and Boston College.

On Sunday, Davis got a follow from head coach Brian Kelly on Twitter.

“I've talked to coach (Clark) Lea and they are very interested in me,” Davis said. “I haven't talked to coach Kelly yet. I plan on visiting in the summer.”

Davis said he’s encouraged by the early feedback coming from South Bend.

“I'm very interested in Notre Dame,” Davis said. “It's a storied program and it’s full of tradition and has a history of having great players.”

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound backer’s said he’s still in the ‘wait-and-see’ stage of his recruitment. He’s already visited North Carolina, Duke, Pittsburgh and Maryland.

“I have 15 offers but I'm interested in any schools that show interest in me,” Davis said.

Davis has football in his genetics. His father played tight end in both the NFL and CFL while he also has a close family member who is well-known in the Indiana high school football world.

“My dad played college ball at Temple and started a year for the (San Diego) Chargers and he also played a year for Edmonton in the CFL,” Davis said. “I have a cousin who lives in Indianapolis, Johnny Adams and he is a running back and he plays for Ben Davis.”

Adams, who plays for the same school that Irish linebacker Asmar Bilal did, is a three-star back who scored an outstanding 132.33 at the recent Opening Regional event in Chicago. Syracuse, Indiana and Western Michigan are some of the six schools to have offered Adams.

Davis also took snaps at running back and full back for his high school last season. On defense, he said he tallied 46 tackles and six sacks. He mentioned that he has a 3.0 GPA and is awaiting SAT and ACT results to give him a clearer indication of which schools will be within his academic reach.
