Texas corner ‘on the cusp’ of Irish offer

Erick Hallett has been on Todd Lyght’s radar since early February. The Texas cornerback visited for the Blue-Gold Game on Saturday and learned more about where he stands with the Irish.

Erick Hallett has raised his stock since Notre Dame first contacted him in early February.

The 5-foot-10, 172-pound cornerback won his position group’s MVP at The Opening Regional in New Orleans on March 19. That included a 4.59 40-yard dash, a 3.84 shuttle drill and a 37-inch vertical jump.

It all led to a Blue-Gold Game visit last weekend, when Hallett sat down with Irish cornerbacks coach Todd Lyght and defensive coordinator Mike Elko to learn if his profile had jumped to the level of an Irish offer.

“I spoke with coach Lyght and coach Elko and I toured the facilities, the weight room and the turf field,” Hallett said. “They were state of the art. They were the best I’ve seen thus far.”

The fact the three-star junior made the trip from Texas to Indiana out of his own pocket definitely scored him bonus points inside the Gug.

“They really liked that I came up and I came up on my own dime,” Hallett said. “They said I’m really high on their recruiting list and they’re recruiting me really hard. They’re expecting to come down this spring in a couple of weeks.”

Lyght assured Hallett that he has their attention.

“He said I’m on the cusp of an offer,” Hallett said. “He just has to come down and see me move in person during the spring.”

Yale, Columbia and Dartmouth as well as several FBS programs, including Washington State, UMass and Nevada have already offered.

Hallett reconnected with former Cy-Fair teammate Brock Wright after the Blue-Gold Game.

“We just talked about old times,” Hallett said. “It was really good seeing him again, being that he left early and he’s up there now. It was good reconnecting with him. He’s always been incredible. That’s Brock.”

After seeing the campus, taking in the spring game and meeting the coaches in person, Notre Dame firmly sits atop Hallett’s list.

“I would love to go to Notre Dame,” Hallett said. “It seems like a perfect fit, really.”

The Irish coaching staff hit the road this week to open their spring evaluation period. Cy-Fair figures to be one of those stops. After this weekend, Hallett will be keeping an eye out for the Irish staff.
