The Irish have offered an assortment of three-star cornerbacks this cycle.
Chris Mitchell is the latest addition to that nationwide hunt. The 6-foot, 190-pound athlete from Mission Viejo, Calif., had strong showings at both The Opening Regional in Los Angeles (finished third overall) and in Oakland (eighth overall).
So far, Mitchell has earned offers from Colorado State, Connecticut, Iowa State, San Diego State, UC-Davis, and Washington State. He’s receiving interest from Boston College.
Mitchell and his family were shocked when Notre Dame put an offer on the table.
“Once (coach Brian) Polian offered me, I was so amazed,” Mitchell said. “It’s such a prestigious school and out of all they can take, they chose me. My mom was really happy and excited for me. She couldn’t believe it and I was in disbelief because Notre Dame is such a prestigious program. It’s crazy.”
Although the offer was surprising, it wasn’t completely out of the blue.
Notre Dame has been in contact with Mitchell throughout the spring and evaluated him during one of his May practices.
“Coach Polian brought out the defensive coordinator to come check me out and see me,” Mitchell said. “He texted me and told me he was going to come out to California to see how I move.”
Shortly after receiving the offer from Notre Dame, Mitchell started making plans to visit South Bend in the coming weeks.
“Most definitely, my parents can go out there, that’s a for sure thing,” Mitchell said. “I’m definitely going to visit at the end of this month or the next month but I’m planning on coming out there this month.”
Mitchell knows his latest offer is much stronger than the rest on his list.
“Notre Dame is definitely on the top of my schools,” Mitchell said.
At this point, Mitchell doesn’t have a timeline for his decision.
