Irish Add Navy Transfer Gilman

Rising sophomore safety Alohi Gilman will join Notre Dame’s program this season with three seasons of eligibility commencing in 2018.

Notre Dame gained its second transfer into the program of the 2017 off-season when former Navy safety Alohi Gilman today announced his intentions to play football in South Bend.

Unlike former Arizona State wide receiver Cameron Smith, a graduate transfer who joined the Irish on Monday, Gilman will not be eligible to play on Saturdays until the 2018 season. But while Smith has one season of college ball remaining, Gilman can play three after serving only his freshman season as a member of the Midshipmen.

"First of all, Alohi is a great fit here in terms of his character and also what he wants to achieve academically," said Irish head coach Brian Kelly through a university release. "Clearly, that's primary in our recruiting. Secondly, in terms of his football fit, we got a good look of him against us last season. He plays the style of safety we want in this program. Alohi's a run-and-hit safety that fits perfectly in the Mike Elko defense."

Gilman registered 76 tackles including five for loss during his true freshman campaign last fall. He added a quintet of passes defended and a pair of fumble recoveries while forcing another.

Gilman led all competitors with 12 tackles in the Midshipmen's 28-27 win over Notre Dame last November. A native of Laie, Hawai'i, the 6'0" 195-pound Gilman was one of just seven players to earn honorable mention from the American Athletic Association in support of its 2016 first and second All-AAC squads.

The addition of Gilman brings Notre Dame's scholarship total to 84 in the wake of eight off-season transfers (six post-graduation) plus the medical retirement of senior Tyler Luatua.

Gilman joins eight current safeties on the 2017 Irish roster, none of which exhaust eligibility at seasons end.

"I'm extremely grateful to be a part of the Notre Dame family," Gilman said. "I'm thankful to the coaching staff and the man above for not only believing in me, but also providing this opportunity. I'm excited for this next chapter in my journey." Top Stories
