Santino Panico is a character. He's a "full of life" type of guy and a refreshing interview. He just returned from San Antonio and the Army All-American bowl. "That was great," said Panico of his San Antonio experience. "I had a great time. I wouldn't have been there if I didn't deserve to be there. Some had some doubt, they doubted my talent, they doubted the area I play in, I showed a lot of people that I belonged there."
Panico has steadily seen his stock rise with a strong senior season. "I played slotback so I ran the ball as well as caught the ball. I had 119 carries for 1,300 yards and 19 touchdowns. I also caught 23 passes for 520 yards and another touchdown. On defense, I had 72 tackles and one interception returned for a touchdown."
College coaches now need to decide where to play him. "Iowa likes me as a receiver, South Carolina and Ball State also like me as a receiver. Notre Dame and Indiana like me as a safety."
As of now, Panico has three offers. "Indiana, Ball State and Eastern Michigan have offered me. I'm going to South Carolina this weekend and they said they will probably offer me. After that, I plan to visit Iowa and Notre Dame the next two weekends. I don't know where I'm going on either weekend, but I plan to visit both the next two weekends."
The Irish have yet to make an in-home visit with Panico. "They said they'd be calling when they can again in January. I'll set up a visit then. I like Notre Dame a lot. I love their academics. I've been to a game there and I loved the campus. The academics are what I like the most about Notre Dame. To get a degree from there would be amazing. My favorite quarterback is Joe Montana. To wear the same jersey he wore, or many of the great Notre Dame players would be awesome."
Panico does prefer to play wide receiver, however, and the Irish are recruiting him as a safety. "That probably won't matter. I do love playing wide receiver though. Iowa wants me at wide receiver, so does South Carolina. I don't think that will matter."
Comments: Panico is hoping for an offer from Notre Dame. He's a fantastic kid. He's the type that every coach would want. I have no idea if they will offer him. If they do, the Irish have a great shot to land him.
