North Carolina Linebacker a Top Prospect

Winston Salem, NC is home to linebacker Derek Nicholson. The 6-2, 230-pound Nicholson will be a hot propsect for most schools this season. He already has a host of offers. Is he interested in Notre Dame?

Derek Nicholson had an outstanding junior season. "I'd say I had a pretty good year," said Nicholson. "I had 181 tackles, 27 tackles for loss, 3 interceptions, 9 pass breakups and 10 sacks."

Those numbers along with Nicholson's highlight video have created a lot of interest from schools. "I have offers from Florida State, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Mississippi State, Clemson, Tennessee and Virginia so far. I've gotten letters from about everyone."

Will the Irish have a shot at Nicholson? "Yeah, I like Notre Dame. I've liked them for a while. They have a good academic school and good football. They have 11 National Championships--more than anyone. They have a lot of tradition. I'd love to take a visit there."

With summer fast approaching, we asked Derek if he had any camp plans this summer. "Not really, we are trying to narrow that down in the next motnh. I want to get a list of about 10 schools that I want to visit. Schools that I haven't seen yet. I plan to go to some spring practices or stop by the school this summer. I think Notre Dame will be one of them, but I don't know for certain."

Nicholson is also set academically. "I have a 3.9 g.p.a and scored a 19 on my A.C.T. this past summer."

Don't expect a decision any time soon for Derek. "I plan to take all five of my visits. I just want to find a place I feel comfortable--a home away from home. I'd like to find a place that is committed to winning, and a good coaching staff that I can trust and like."

Comments: Derek seems like a good kid. He should be one of the very best linebackers in the country this year. He also appears to have some interest in Notre Dame. We will have to see if he finds his way up to South Bend in the next few months. That might be the true indicator in how much interest he has in Notre Dame. Top Stories
