Irish Bomb Winthrop, 19-6

The Irish baseball team exploded for 19 runs in an impressive victory over Winthrop (4-2)on Friday. The Irish are enjoying their first 3-0 start since 1992 and play two games today against Florida Memorial and Florida Atlantic.

Chris Niesel improved his record to 2-0 on the season and 15-1 in his career at Notre Dame. Niesel scattered eight hits and one run in seven innings on the mound while striking out five. Freshman Dan Kapala also saw his first action retiring all three batters he faced.

The Irish were led by sophomore shortstop Greg Lopez' career day at the plate. Lopez was 4-for-6 with his first home run in his college career and also added six RBI.

Matt Edwards (3 hits, 2B, 2 RBI) continued his hot start and senior catcher Javi Sanchez also had an impressive day at the plate (3 hits, 2B, 2 RBI).

In the end the Irish plated 19 runs on 18 hits and enjoyed yet another flawless day in the field without committing an error. The Irish have committed just one error in three games on the season.

Notre Dame resumes play today at 2 PM against Florida Memorial. Freshman Jess Stewart will see his first action on the mound. The Irish also play another game against Florida Atlantic at 7 PM today as sophomore Tom Thornton tries to earn his second win of the season against the Owls.
