Kurt Mattes will probably keep growing just like his brother Brian. He's already bigger than Brian was at this stage in his recruitment. "I'm 6-6, 260 right now," said Mattes. "Most schools are recruiting me as an offensive lineman or defensive linemen. I had 50 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 5 sacks on defense. On offense, I had 85 percent blocking, with 15 pancakes, and 14 receptions for 200 yards and 2 touchdowns."
Mattes also has a couple of impressive early offers. "Virginia and Pittsburgh have offered me so far. I'm getting a lot of mail from Notre Dame, Penn State, Boston College, Iowa, Michigan, Pittsburgh, Stanford and Indiana."
The younger Mattes has also spent some time on Notre Dame campus. "I've been there. It's a really nice place. I've talked to my brother about it and he really likes it there. It seems like a great place."
The summer should be busy for Mattes. "I don't plan to attend any camps right now. We'll probably just get in the car and go see places. I've already been to Penn State and Virginia junior days. I've been to a few games at Virginia, Pittsburgh, Penn State and Notre Dame. We'll probably go check out some other schools this summer."
Mattes is also a fine student with a 4.2 in his core and a 1280 on his SAT. He said he plans to take some time with his decision. "I'm going to take some visits before deciding. I want to make the right decision and get all the information I can before deciding."
Comments: The Irish have an in with Mattes because of Brian. What is best for one son is not always best for another, but one gets the feeling that the Irish will play a role in the race. We'll keep on eye on Kurt to look for mutual interest.
