Brian Cushing had an impressive junior season at linebacker. "I had 120 tackles, 10 sacks, 18 tackles for loss and seven interception," Cushing said.
Cushing also has the footspeed and the grades as well. "My friend just timed me a 4.40. I did run a 4.45 at Maryland and Rutgers camp last year. I have a 3.4 in my core right now. I have not taken the test. I'll take that in May."
Plenty of schools have found out about Cushing. "I have offers from Rutgers, Syracuse, Boston College, Michigan State and Stanford right now. Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa, Miami, I just got something from Notre Dame, UCLA and Alabama are sending me the most mail right now."
Cushing is somewhat of a camp veteran already and plans to attend more camps this summer. "I've been to Maryland and Rutgers in the past. I plan to go to the Nike Camp at Virginia. I also plan to go to Ohio State, Michigan, Boston College and probably Rutgers this year."
We asked Cushing which team he cheered for growing up. "I cheered for Notre Dame and Miam a little bit."
With the Irish being a childhood favorite, does that mean the Irish are being strongly considered by Cushing? "Very heavily. I love the tradition there. They have a strong tradition as well as great academics and it's not far away from home. I will be considering Notre Dame very strongly. I'd say my family favors Notre Dame."
When can we expect a decision from Cushing? "It could definitely be early. If I'm still unsure after the summer I'll probably take some visits. I could make an early decision. I plan to attend a bunch of camps to see some schools. I plan to go out to see Notre Dame sometime this summer. Probably when I go to Michigan camp. If I feel comfortable with a school I'll probably make an early decision."
Cushing also knows what he's looking for in a school. "The academics are number one. I'm looking for the best combination of academics and football. Those two will be the main things."
Comments: The Irish certainly appear to be in the race for Cushing. That is a good thing because Cushing will likely be one of the top linebackers on the East Coast this season. We'll keep an eye on him.
