At 6-2, 295 pounds, Pauu is a force to be reckoned with on the defensive line. He put up impressive numbers as a junior recording 97 tackles (73 unassisted), 8 sacks, 6 tips and 4 fumbles caused.
The biggest surprise as far as Pauu's stats are concerned is with regard to his offensive output. At 295 lbs., one might expect him to be utilized as a lineman on the offensive side of the ball. However, Pauu recorded 5 touchdowns and over 200 yards rushing as a fullback.
Has he heard from Notre Dame? "Yeah, they've sent me letters." Mataele said he was interested in the Irish and that Notre Dame was "a real good school." However, the Irish didn't make their way into his top 5 which currently include USC, UCLA, Michigan, Oregon and Arizona.
As to what he's is looking for in a school, "I'm looking to stay close to California. I'd like to to a good school where I feel comfortable. I'm looking for a good coaching staff and a school that will allow me to fulfill my (Mormon) mission."
Pauu has a self-reported 2.9 grade point average in his core classes and has yet to take the test. He plans to attend the Nike Camp at San Diego State later this month.
Comments: Although defensive tackle is going to be a need for the Irish in this recruiting class, Notre Dame fans shouldn't expect Pauu to be filling that need. Because he isn't looking to go far away from home and doesn't have Notre Dame in his top 5 at the moment, I don't think the odds of Notre Dame landing this prospect are very high.
