Texas Tailback Likes Irish

Jared Hawkins, at 5-11 and 180 pounds, rushed for nearly seven yards per carry as a junior at Klein High School near Houston, TX. He's hearing from schools all over the country. Is he interested in the Irish? Are they recruiting him?

Hawkins was limited to playing in 8 games as a junior due to a hamstring injury. When he was in, however, he used his 4.5 forty speed to accumulate 1,132 yards on 164 carries.

Has he heard from Notre Dame? "Yeah, I've been getting handwritten letters from coach Preston." Hawkins is also getting handwritten letters from Oklahoma State, Northwestern, Missuori and Vanderbilt.

Is he interested in the Irish? "Definitely. They are a real good school and I'm definitely interested in them."

Is distance going to be a factor? "I lived in Florida as a kid and then we moved to Pennsylvania, so I've lived all over and distance isn't going to be a factor at all."

What are the most important factors in choosing a school? "First and foremost, I want to get a good education. After that, I'll look at the football program and the depth chart to see who's at my position in the program. I'll look at the school's campus, the area and the tradition of the football program."

Hawkins says that he doesn't have any timeframe for making his decision. He plans to camp at SMU and Baylor this summer and also plans to try to make visits to Vanderbilt, Arizona and Arizona State.

Hawkins has a 3.3 g.p.a. and is awaiting his SAT results.

Comments: Hawkins claims not to have any favorites at this point, but he said that he's definitely interested in the Irish. I expect Notre Dame to be in the mix, if not a favorite, if they choose to offer this recruit.
