California Quarterback to Camp at Notre Dame?

Karsten Sween, at 6-2 and 210 pounds, just got back from the San Diego State Nike Camp where he put up some impressive numbers. He's hearing from Oklahoma, UCLA, Arizona, Virginia and Oregon, among others. What, if anything, has he heard from the Irish?

Karsten Sween put up some impressive statistics as a junior at Burroughs High School in Ridgecrest, California. Sween completed 244 of 401 passes for 3,762 yards, 40 touchdowns, and only 9 interceptions.

His recent Nike Camp numbers were equally impressive. Sween turned in a 4.72 in the forty, bench-pressed 295 lbs., squatted 420 lbs., and had a 29.7 inch vertical jump.

Has he heard from the Irish? "Yeah, I've been getting handwritten letters from Coach Baer."

Is he interested in Notre Dame? "Definitely. I plan on attending their 4-day camp this summer…I grew up idolizing Joe Montana. He's always sort of been my role model as a quarterback. I've always followed professional football more than college, but when I watched college football, I always liked Notre Dame."

Does he have a timeframe for making a decision? "Right now my goal is to take all five of my official visits before deciding, but you never know."

What will be the most important factor in his decision? "Academics will be huge. I want to be a pre-med major, so I'll look for a school with a good pre-med program. After that, I'll look at the team's offensive line and defense. Offensive line will obviously have an effect on my success with the team, so I want a school that is recruiting good offensive linemen. Also, defense wins championships and I want to win a championship, so I'll look at how the defense performs. The team's 2004 record will be important, because I want to go to a winning program. Also, their success on the field will effect how good a recruiting class they'll get, and I want to be part of a really strong recruiting class in order to have the best chance of success during my college career."

Sween says his top 3 at the moment are Notre Dame, UCLA and Oregon. He currently has a 3.3 gpa and scored a 980 on his SAT, so he should have no trouble with admissions.

COMMENTS: The biggest mystery of this recruiting season thus far is who the Irish really like at the quarterback position. There's no doubt that the quarterbacks who attend the camp this summer will have the edge. Sween seems to have genuine interest in the Irish. UCLA has a great pre-med program and is the hometown favorite, but Notre Dame will definitely have a shot with an offer. Top Stories
