Chavis Wide Open

Waldorf, Maryland is the home of defensive end prospect James Chavis. The 6-1, 225-pounder is starting to garner interest from schools around the country. Is Notre Dame one of those schools? Does Chavis have any interest in Notre Dame? We found out.

James Chavis lines up at defensive end for Westlake high school. Is that where he projects to play in college? "It will be either defensive end or outside linebacker, depending on the team I play for."

While Chavis has not yet received any early offers, he has been receiving plenty of mail. "Right now, I'm getting most of the mail from Marshall, Northwestern, and Pitt," said Chavis.

Have the Irish been in contact with him? "Yes, I have just started to receive more mail from Notre Dame."

Does Chavis have interest in the Irish? "Yes, I do. Their academics are really impressive. I'm definitely interested in them."

Chavis summer plans are still to be decided. "I don't know which camps I'm going to yet. I'm still trying to get all that worked out."

We asked if he plans on deciding on a school early. "No, I'll probably take all my visits and see what the schools have to offer."

What are the important factors that will decide where Chavis ends up? "The school's graduation rates are key; I'll be looking at that. They also have to have a good computer science program."

Would distance play a factor in choosing a school? "No, not at all," said Chavis.

Are his parents leaning him in a particular direction? "No, they just want me to choose a school that has a strong academic reputation. The rest is up to me."

We asked Chavis for a short list of his favorites. "Notre Dame, Northwestern, Marshall, and Pitt are my top schools right now."

Chavis has a self reported 3.0 g.p.a. and is awaiting his SAT results.

Comments: The Irish are very much in the race to land Chavis. With Notre Dame's combination of academics and athletics, if they offer, we wouldn't be surprised to see the Irish stay at the top of his list. Top Stories
