Lee Renfro has drawn the attention of coaches around the nation, and after seeing his stats, it's easy to understand why. As a junior, Renfro rushed for 1,675 yards with 21 touchdowns. He also recorded 125 tackles, 41 assists, and 3 interceptions on the defensive side of the ball.
Schools are recruiting Renfro as both a running back and strong safety. Does he have a preference on which side of the ball he plays on? "No, I really don't have a preference," said Renfro.
The Southwestern Pulaski County star already has received offers from Ball State, Eastern Kentucky, UT-Martin, Eastern Illinois, and Southern Illinois, and continues to draw interest from some of the top schools in the nation.
"Cincinnati and Vanderbilt are close to offering me," said Renfro. "I'm also being contacted by Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa, Northwestern, Kentucky, and Louisville."
Besides the mail and phone calls, Renfro has had numerous visitors to his high school. "Louisville, Kentucky, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Cincinnati, Eastern Kentucky, and Western Kentucky have all visited my school."
Has Notre Dame been in contact? "Yes, they have. I keep in contact with Coach (Jimmy) Gonzalez the most." Has Notre Dame said anything about an offer? "No, not yet."
Is Renfro interested in the Irish? "Yes, I'm very interested. First of all, their tradition is impressive. Their coaches are great, also. Coach Willingham does a great job with both his players and his coaching staff."
During his spring break, Renfro went on a tour of the country to check out different schools. "I visited South Carolina, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma, Iowa, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Ball State," said Renfro.
After that extensive road trip this past spring, it looks like he'll have a busy summer, as well. "I plan on attending summer camps at South Carolina, Northwestern, Miami (Ohio), Iowa, and Oklahoma. There might be a few more, but those are the ones that I know for sure of."
When does Renfro plan on making a decision? "I'm not in that big of hurry right now. Then again, it all depends on who offers and when."
What are his important factors in choosing a school? "Academics are the most important. I plan on going to medical school, so that will be real important. The coaching staff will also be important."
Would distance be problem? "No, that won't be a problem at all," said Renfro.
We asked what schools interest Renfro the most. "Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Cincinnati, and Iowa are the schools that I have the most interest in right now."
Do his parents have a preference on where he'll go to school? "No, not really. They'll follow my career wherever I go."
Renfro has a self reported 3.8 GPA and scored a 23 on the ACT.
Comments: Renfro has a strong interest in Notre Dame. If the Irish offer, then we think that they shoot up to the top of his list. The combination of academics and athletics should keep Notre Dame in the race for this dual prospect. Irish Eyes will be sure to keep you informed on Renfro's recruitment.
