California Back Close to First Offers

St. Paul high school in Sante Fe Springs, Calif. is home to running back Dwight Tardy. The 5-11, 203-pound Tardy is starting to gain attention from schools across the country. We talked to Tardy to get the latest on the schools that have been recruiting him. Are the Irish interested in Tardy? Does he like Notre Dame?

Dwight Tardy had a solid junior season. "I only played in eight games," said Tardy. "I think I had 870 yards and nine touchdowns. I played a little strong safety as well."

Tardy says he doesn't have any offers at this time, but that could change real soon. "I don't have any offers yet," he said. "But, BYU, Utah and Colorado State have all said they are close to offering me."

A number of schools also called Tardy this May. "UCLA, Washington, Washington State, Michigan, Wyoming, BYU and Oregon have called me so far," said Tardy.

The Irish have been showing some interest in Tardy. "They've sent me letters," said Tardy of Notre Dame. "They didn't call me yet, and I'm not sure if they've stopped by my school."

Is Tardy interested in Notre Dame? "Absolutely," he said. "It's a good education, they're on TV every week. They have a great coach and it's a program on the rise. Everybody loves Notre Dame, or at least you respect them. I hope they recruit me."

Tardy says he hasn't finalized his summer plans just yet. "I really don't know where I'm going this summer," said Tardy. "I might go to USC camp on June 28th, but that depends on baseball. I have a number of teams scouting me to play centerfield for them. The Mets, the Royals and the Mariners have all scouted me. I hit .398 this season and made all-league. I might make all-CIF as well."

We asked Tardy what would be important to him when he was looking for a school. "I think the education is the most important," Tardy said. "I'm not too worried about the depth chart. I'm just looking for a good program with a good education. Distance or weather doesn't matter to me."

Comments: The Irish don't appear to be recruiting Tardy heavily at this point. He would be very interested in Notre Dame if they did start recruiting him heavily. We've watched him on film and he's a very solid running back. He's not a blazer, but he runs very well inside. He's got good vision and feet in traffic, and can hit it up inside with authority. He's a good athlete that could play defense as well. He reminded me a lot of Travis Thomas on film with a little more shake and bake. Top Stories
