Washington Has Irish Out Front

Sugar Land, Texas linebacker Kevin Washington has been a busy man lately. He's attended five camps so far receiving three offers, including one from Notre Dame. We spoke with Washington to find out the latest.

Kevin Washington was thrilled when the offer came. "They had been hinting to it at camp," said Washington of his Notre Dame offer. "I came home and there it was waiting for me. I was so excited, I had to read it twice just to make sure."

That made three total offers for Washington. "Wisconsin and Houston are the other two offers I have right now," Washington said.

Washington said he was very impressed on his camp visit to Notre Dame. "I liked it there a lot," said Washington. "We saw a lot of the campus. I talked a lot with coach Preston, coach Simmons and coach Willingham. They are all great guys. Coach Willingham is a real down to earth guy. My whole family went with me and they loved it there, too. My mom and dad were really impressed. We talked about me being an all-around good person, and not just about football."

The 6-1, 215-pound Washington says he'll be making a decision real soon. "I pretty much know where I want to go," he said. "I'll have my decision before the end of the summer for sure. It might be even sooner. I just need to talk to my parents a little bit and make sure it's the right decision."

Is Notre Dame the school he is speaking of? "I'd say they are way out in front right now," said Washington. "They are definitely my No. 1 school right now."

Comments: Washing told me that he recorded 79 tackles and 2 interceptions last season. He said he'd probably head to TCU camp before making a decision. He's already been to camps at Notre Dame, Houston, Northwestern, Michigan State and Baylor. The Irish appear to be in very good shape with Washington, and he just might end up being the first commitment for the Irish in the 2004 class.
