Scott Smith says he already had a number of offers before receiving his offer from Notre Dame. "Michigan State, Illinois, UCLA, Arizona, Indiana, Northwestern, Bowling Green, those are some of them," said Smith. "I have 13 total including the one from Notre Dame."
The Irish became the most recent school to offer as of yesterday. "I got an e-mail from Greg Mattison telling me to call him," said Smith. "He told me that they were offering me a scholarship and that the offer would be in the mail to me today."
Smith said he was thrilled to hear the news the Irish were offering. "I was very excited about that," said Smith. "I was hoping they were going to offer. I went to camp there for one day and I spoke to both coach Mattison and coach Simmons. They both said they liked what they saw and would be recruiting me much harder. They told me they liked me at linebacker, probably middle. I was very excited to hear they were offering me."
An early decision could be on the way for Smith. "Part of me wants to make an early decision," he said. "I also might wait and take some visits. It will all depend when I feel like I'm ready and 100 percent sure where I want to go."
Smith also gave us a list of his current leaders. "Notre Dame, Illinois, Michigan State and UCLA are my top schools," he's said. "Notre Dame" was his answer when asked if any one school was leading at this moment.
The recruiting process has been a joy and a surprise for Smith so far. "I never thought I'd have this many offers and from these type of schools this early," said Smith. "I thought I might get a few schools to look at me in May and maybe come away with an offer or two by the end of summer. I never thought I'd end up where I am. It's a great feeling."
Comments: The Irish appear to be in good shape for Smith. He might make an early decision, but he didn't seem like it would be coming real soon. We'll keep an eye on him to see if he decides to make an early decision.
