Lorig Enjoying Summer

Rolling Hills, Calif. defensive end-tight end prospect Erik Lorig has been busy this summer. The 6-3, 245-pound Lorig has been playing a lot of basketball this summer, but hasn't forgotten about football. Lorig visited Notre Dame early this spring and we spoke with Lorig to get his thoughts on his visit to South Bend. Are the Irish in the race for his services?

"Summer has been real good," said Erik Lorig. "I've been very busy. I didn't attend any camps. I've been playing a lot of basketball. I've been taking summer school and we still have football so I've been busy."

Lorig says he's already landed 15 offers so far in this early recruiting season. "Cal, UCLA, USC, Notre Dame, Arizona, Duke, Arizona State, LSU, Washington, Oregon, Michigan and San Diego State have offered me," Lorig said. "That's all that I can remember. I think I have 15 offers."

The California native did take some unofficial visits this spring. "I went out to Notre Dame and Michigan in the spring," he said. "I went to Notre Dame's junior day.

"My Dad and I had never been to Notre Dame before. It was amazing. The whole place was very impressive. I've never been in a atmosphere like that before. We both really liked it there."

Lorig said he's also spoken with coach Willingham. "I just kind of shook his hand and talked to him briefly at junior day because so many people were there," Lorig said. "He did call me in May and we did speak for quite awhile. He's a really interesting guy. He just told me to keep working and that they really liked me.

"I've also spoken to coach Baer a few times. He said they are recruiting me for defensive end, defensive tackle and tight end. They aren't really sure where I'll play. I really don't know yet what I want to play in college."

Michigan also impressed Lorig. "Michigan was pretty cool," Lorig said. "The guys out there in the BIG 10 go through some workouts. I like the school and the campus there."

Lorig says a decision will likely come after his season. "I really don't know when I'll commit," he said. "I plan to take my visits. If a school feels right, I'll just go ahead and commit. Distance won't be a problem for me. I don't mind leaving home."

Does Lorig have a top five? "Yeah, I'd say Cal, Notre Dame, UCLA, USC and Michigan are my top five right now," Lorig said.

Comments: Lorig appears to be wide open at this point. The Irish do appear to be very much in the race right now. He seemed very impressed with his visit to Notre Dame. We don't think he'll make a decision any time soon.
