Cushing Down to Eight?

Four-star linebacker prospect Brian Cushing is a hot commodity. The Oradell, N.J. prospect has a host of offers already, but has narrowed his list down to eight. Did the Irish make the cut of eight?

Brian Cushing has a busy fall camp schedule. The 6-3, 220-pound Cushing plays strong safety for his team, but everyone is recruiting him to play linebacker.

"I play strong safety, but everyone is recruiting me for linebacker," Cushing said. "Our first scrimmage is on Thursday. We play against other teams. We actually have three scrimmages before our first game. Our first game is on September 11th."

Cushing won't be taking in a lot of college football games as his Bergen Catholic high school plays a lot of their games on the weekends.

"We play our games on a lot of Saturday afternoons, some Friday nights and even some on Saturday nights," Cushing said. "I won't make it to a lot of games this season."

Cushing has well over 30 offers, but he's narrowed his list down to manageable eight schools at this point.

"I'd say USC, Miami, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Maryland, Virginia, Penn State and Rutgers are my top schools," Cushing said. "I've kind of narrowed it down to those eight and I'll pick my official visits from those schools.

Three teams likely to get official visits are USC, Miami and Rutgers as Cushing has developed a good relationship with the coaches recruiting him at these three schools so far.

"I've got a real good relationship with coach Cristobal at Miami," Cushing said. "I also speak to coach McNair at USC a lot and like him a lot. I have a great relationship with all the coaches at Rutgers so I'd say they are my top three at this point."

Don't expect and early decision from Cushing. The Oradell, N.J. native says he plans to take his time before deciding.

"I plan on taking all five of my official visits," Cushing said. "I don't think I'll take any during the season because we play on a lot of Saturdays. I'll have to take them after my season is over. I probably won't decide until late January or maybe even signing day."

So what is Cushing looking for in a school?

"I'd say the education will be important," Cushing said. "The tradition and playing time will be important. I think the most important thing will be where I feel the most comfortable."

Comments: The Irish are hanging on by a thread at this point with Cushing. With three official visits likely taken, Notre Dame will have to make a big push soon to land one of the remaining two. We'll check back with Cushing in September when the coaches can start calling prospects again. Top Stories
