Wilson Returns From Official Visit

Akron, Ohio defensive end Lawrence Wilson recently returned from his official visit to Notre Dame. The 6-5, 230-pound Wilson visited the Irish last weekend for their game with Purdue. We spoke with Wilson after his official visit to get his thoughts on the visit. What did he think of Notre Dame? Will he take other visits? When might he make his final decision? We spoke to Wilson to find the answers to these questions and more.

Akron, Ohio defensive end Lawrence Wilson said he had a great time on his official visit to Notre Dame.

"It went really well," said Wilson. "I basically liked everything about it. I loved the game and hanging out with the players and recruits. It was a great experience."

Wilson said he spent a lot of time with current wide receiver commitment David Nelson, who was also on his official visit last weekend.

"I hung out with David Nelson the whole time," Wilson said. "He's a really cool guy. I also got to sit with Scott (Smith) and Evan (Sharpley). David Bruton was right behind us and D.J. Hord was there with us as well. We had a great time at the game."

The Ohio native had some impressive hosts while on his official visit.

"My host was Justin Tuck the first night, and then Vic (Victor Abiamiri) the next night. We hung out with a lot of the players on both nights. I really felt like I fit in real well with them. They all made me feel comfortable and welcome."

The talented defensive end also spent a lot of time talking to the Irish coaching staff.

"We talked to coach Willingham on Sunday," Wilson said. "First it was my family and I, and then it was just me and him.

"He told me about what a great opportunity Notre Dame is, and that I need to grasp that opportunity. He told me that they wanted me as a rush end and that I have the opportunity to be the next Justin Tuck.

"I really like coach Willingham and I could definitely see myself playing for him."

Wilson is also high on defensive line coach Greg Mattison.

"I've liked coach Mattison from way back in camp," he said. "He's a great guy. He taught me a lot of things to work on and I really liked him. He spent a lot of time with us on the visit."

We asked Wilson if coach Willingham asked for his commitment and what he said.

"He did ask for my commitment," Wilson said. "I told him I was a little overwhelmed at that point, and I needed to sit down and think about it. He understood that."

Wilson said another visit could be on the schedule for Ohio State, but a decision this week isn't out of the question, either.

"I'm not sure what I want to do yet," Wilson said. "I might take a visit to Ohio State this week. I might end up making a decision this week. I'm still trying to think it over as to what I want to do."

Wilson also said he's spoken at great length with his family about his decision already.

"I've already talked it over with my parents," he said. "I know what they want me to do, but it has to be my decision and they respect that."

We asked Wilson if he was thinking about committing to Notre Dame at this point.

"I definitely like Notre Dame right now," he said. "That's what I'm trying to decide. There's a pretty good chance I could decide this week. I'll for sure where I'm going in the next two weeks."

Comments: It wouldn't surprise us if Wilson did take a visit to Ohio State just to have a school to compare to Notre Dame. His top two have always seemed to be the Irish and the Buckeyes. While we don't think Wilson is a lock to choose Notre Dame, and the Buckeyes still have a shot, we do think he likes the Irish quite a bit and could choose Notre Dame any day now.
