Linebacker Brian Cushing recently traveled to Notre Dame to watch the Irish defeat Stanford last Saturday. The 6-3, 225-pound Cushing said he enjoyed his Irish game experience.
"It was better than I expected," Cushing said. "You have these ideas of how Notre Dame would be with their tradition and everything, but it was even better than I expected."
Cushing said he spent a great deal of time with the Irish coaching staff on his visit.
"I spent a lot of time with coach Willingham and coach Simmons," Cushing said. "I already knew them because they came and watch one of my baseball games this spring, which I really appreciated."
"They're both great guys. I really like both of them. I could definitely see myself playing for coach Simmons."
Traveling with Cushing was his father, who also had a great time according to the talented linebacker.
"He loved it there," Cushing said of his father. "He's always liked Notre Dame. He really enjoyed the game environment, and he's really excited about the opportunities that I could have if I go to Notre Dame."
Cushing said he also spent a lot of time with California safety prospect Shawn Oatis, who was also at Notre Dame this weekend for an official visit.
"He and I really got a long well," Cushing said of Oatis. "We have a lot in common. We hung out a lot. I basically did everything he did so we spent a lot of time with each other."
The New Jersey native said he'll keep in contact with Oatis throughout the process.
"I already have," said Cushing when asked if he'll keep in contact with the talented safety. "We've talked a lot about the visit. We'll keep in touch."
The Scout five-star prospect says he'll be setting up his official visits very soon.
"I'll take visits to Miami, USC, Virginia and Louisvile," Cushing said. "I'm not sure if I'll take an official visit to Notre Dame now. I basically just had an official visit there. I did everything Shawn did, I just had to pay for it. I know everything I need to know about Notre Dame now."
We asked Cushing where this recent visit landed the Irish on his list.
"They're pretty high," he said. "One or two for sure. I really liked it there."
Comments: The Irish appear to have hit a home run with Cushing. He's always had the Irish on the radar, but we never felt the Irish were leading the race. This should be an interesting battle for a talented football player.
