Herring Putting the Irish on Hold

Melbourne defensive back Ray Herring was set to schedule Notre Dame this weekend, but that visit has been canceled. We spoke with the 5-11, 190-pound safety prospect to get his thoughts on Notre Dame. Do the Irish still have a chance at Herring?

Defensive back Ray Herring said he was stunned when he heard the news that Tyrone Willingham had been fired.

"I didn't see that coming," said Herring. "I didn't expect that to happen at all. I really liked coach Willingham. That really surprised me."

Herring says he's already rescheduled his visit to Notre Dame.

"I'm still interested in Notre Dame," said Herring. "I've already rescheduled my visit there for January 21."

Herring had been listing Notre Dame as one of his top school and we asked Herring if his interest in Notre Dame has dropped since hearing the news.

"I really don't know," he said. "Everyone is even. I can't say because I don't know who their coach is and what to think about it."

Comments: Herring has always seemed interested in Notre Dame. He did seem disappointed when speaking with him. As with most of Notre Dame's current targets, we simply won't know what they'll think until a new coach is named.
