A.J. Trump said the news shocked him when he had heard that Tyrone Willingham had been fired.
"I couldn't believe it," Trump said. "I don't think it was right for them to do that. He had a great sophomore class and they should've at least let him get through that sophomore class. I didn't like that.
The termination of Willingham has had a negative impact on Trump.
"It has hurt them," Trump said. "I was leaning towards Notre Dame but now I'm 100 percent open to any school."
The Irish aren't out of the race, however.
"They're still in the running," Trump said of Notre Dame. "I don't have a clue who their coach will be or if I'll like their new staff. I'll just have to wait and see what happens. I'm just waiting to see who they hire."
Trump still has an open visit since his Notre Dame visit was canceled. We asked if he was going to save that visit for Notre Dame or if he was looking at other schools for his final visit.
"I'll have to wait and see," said Trump. "It's kind of like Florida. I had to wait and see who they hired as a coach. Now I need to wait and see if they keep any of their coaches and if I like the new coaches. I really don't know what to think."
Many players are having a lot of in-home visits the past two weeks. We asked Trump if he had any in-home visits scheduled this week.
"I don't have any this week," said Trump. "I had Miami last week and NC State. My mom canceled all in-home visits until after Christmas."
Comments: Trump appears willing to at least listen to the new coaching staff. However, the longer this drags on, the less patient I expect all of these prospects to be. We'll check back after the Irish hire a coach to get Trump's reaction.
