Weis is currently leading the offense of the 11-1 Patriots and is said to be staying in New England until the season is finished. We've heard Weis will only be allowed to spend a few days a week at Notre Dame while still coaching with the Patriots.
Wies' unavailability will certainly be a roadblock in recruiting, but with a successful and hungry coaching staff, the Irish can still close out the recruiting season on a high note.
Sources that want to remain unnamed have told Irish Eyes Irish that Weis already has most of his staff in place. We've heard that Virginia defensive coordinator Al Golden is a strong candidate for the defensive coordinator position.
Golden is in his fourth year as defensive coordinators for the Cavaliers. He's also known as a great recruiter, who would be a strong candidate to spearhead Notre Dame's recruiting while Weis finishes his season.
The 35-year-old Golden has spent most of his coaching career coaching linebackers at both Penn State and Boston College and now at Virginia. He was also Penn State's recruiting coordinator before leaving for Virginia.
Also rumored to be a strong candidate for a coaching position is Penn State defensive back coach Brian Norwood.
Norwood has spent four seasons at Penn State coaching the safeties, and the Penn State defense is current ranked No. 7 in pass defense. Norwood has spent time coaching at Texas Tech, Navy, Richmond and Arizona and is also said to be a strong recruiter.
Another coach rumored to be a candidate is New England Patriots offensive line assistant Matt Patricia. Patricia is in his first season at New England as an offensive staff assistant after spending time at Syracuse as an assistant.
The important thing is for Weis and the Irish is to get his staff in place and for them to hit the recruiting trail immediately.
With 10 current commitments, the first task at hand will be to reclaim the commitments from these top targets. With David Nelson, Lawrence Wilson and Brandon Harrison already de-committed from the Irish, this new staff already has an uphill battle.
Safety David Bruton is also visiting Wisconsin this weekend and a few other targets might be considering looking at other schools.
The Irish will likely not be able to host a recruiting weekend until the weekend of Jan. 15 so this incoming staff will have plenty of time to fill the spots for this very important recruiting weekend for Notre Dame.
We will be digging all day today to find out what we can about the new coaching staff and what others are saying about Notre Dame's hiring of Weis.
