Irish Interested in McCarthy

Youngstown, Ohio athlete Kyle McCarthy is a new name on the radar for Irish fans. The 6-1, 190-pound athlete played quarterback for Cardinal Mooney high school in Youngstown, Ohio, but the big schools are mostly looking at McCarthy as an athlete. New Irish defensive backs coach Brian Polian visited McCarthy in his home this afternoon and we spoke with the talented athlete to get his thoughts on Notre Dame.

Athlete Kyle McCarthy has seen his stock skyrocket in the last few days.

"I have offers from Ohio State, Toledo, Akron, Navy and Arizona so far. Boston College and Northwestern say they are very close to offering me," McCarthy said.

The Irish are also hot on his trail and visited his home today.

"I had an in-home visit with coach Polian today," said McCarthy. "He said he saw my tape and was really impressed with what he saw.

"He said their coaching staff hasn't met yet as a full staff and they were going to do that this weekend. He was going to show my tape to coach Weis and the staff and I'd know more later this weekend on if they were going to offer me."

We asked McCarthy where the Irish were recruiting him to play.

"Pretty much all the big schools are recruiting me for defensive back," McCarthy said. "Coach Polian said they liked me at defensive back. The other schools are recruiting me at quarterback. I really don't care where I play. The sooner I can get on the field the better."

Since we don't know much about coach Polian, I asked McCarthy for his impression of the new Irish assistant coach.

"He's a really good guy," McCarthy said of Polian. "He's really young, and seemed very upfront with everything. He definitley left a good impression on me. He said he's really excited about being at Notre Dame and what they plan to do there."

Being from Ohio, we asked McCarthy if he grew up a big Buckeye fan.

"No, actually I've always been a Notre Dame fan," he said. "I have a brother that goes to school there and my grandfather played baseball there. I went on an unofficial visit there this year for a game and loved it there."

McCarthy says he's now finalizing his visit schedule for the rest of the month.

"I've already visited Toldeo, and I have a visit scheduled for Ohio State this weekend and Navy the next weekend," McCarthy said. "I haven't decided on my other two visits right now."

We asked McCarthy if he had a dream school he's always wanted to attend.

"Yeah, I've always wanted to go to Notre Dame," McCarthy said. "But Ohio State is also a big-time program and they've offered and Notre Dame hasn't yet. We'll just wait and see what happens. If Notre Dame offers I'll definitely take a visit there."

We asked McCarthy if there was a chance he might commit to Ohio State this weekend on his visit.

"I wouldn't say there is no chance, but I don't plan on making any commitments," McCarthy said. "I'd like to see what the other schools have to say before I make any decisions."

With all the new attention, we asked McCarthy how it felt to have all a number of the top schools coming after him.

"It feels great," McCarthy said. "I've always felt I could play at that level and that I was underrated. Coach Tressel saw my tape and said I was the most underrated player in Ohio. It's pretty exciting now that people are starting to take notice."

Comments: The Irish will have to get on the stick with McCarthy to stay in the race. We're going to bet Ohio State makes a big push for his commitment this weekend. Will McCarthy wait to see if Notre Dame offers? Top Stories
