Athlete Kyle Johnson is starting to become a hot prospect. The 6-2, 185-pound athlete plays both defensive back and wide receiver, and his impressive senior season has sent more than a few coaches to Hopewell high school.
"I had a pretty good senior season," said Johnson. "I had 40 catches for 720 yards and five touchdowns. I also had six interceptions on the year. I'm pretty fast as well. I ran a 4.38 at the Shrine Bowl combine, and I made All-Conference this year."
Johnson says most schools are looking at him as a wide receiver.
"Most say they like me as a wide receiver, but I can play on defense as well," he said. "I prefer offense, but I'll play anywhere they want me to play."
The rising prospect says he doesn't have a lot of big name offers yet, but some big names are starting to get in contact with him.
"ECU says they're about ready to offer me," said Johnson. "I have offers from some schools like Richmond, James Madison and Western Carolina. I know Marshall is also coming by the school to see me soon."
The Irish also appear to be sniffing around.
"I haven't talked to Notre Dame, but they've been in touch with my dad a few times," Johnson said. "I'm hoping they start to recruit me."
Johnson does have a few official visits lined up at this point.
"I've already been to North Carolina State," Johnson said. "They lost their offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach so I'm still waiting to hear what they are going to do with me. I think they were close to offering me before they left.
"I'm going to ECU this weekend. I have Richmond scheduled for the 14th and I'm going to (North Carolina) on the 21st."
We asked Johnson if he's surprised by the new attention he's been receiving.
"I'm a little surprised," Johnson said. "I thought I'd get a few schools calling me. I'm hoping to hear more from other schools. I'm hoping that Notre Dame starts recruiting me."
Comments: Keep and eye on Johnson. He might be a new name to add to the list very soon.
