"I wasn't planning on committing this weekend," said McCarthy of his commitment to Notre Dame. "Just seeing everything, and what Notre Dame is about, I just knew it was the right place for me."
We asked McCarthy why he ultimately chose the Irish.
"I guess it's the combination of everything," he said. "The people, the coaches, the academics, football. I loved everything about it."
McCarthy admits he was fond of Ohio State, but Notre Dame was too hard to turn down.
"The Ohio State coaches are a great bunch of guys," he said. "I liked them and what they had to offer. In fact, I liked everyone that recruited me so it was a hard decision. But everyone was telling me to do what was best for me. I knew I wanted to be at Notre Dame. It just felt like the best place for me."
We asked McCarthy if he talked to coach Weis after his commitment, and what he thought of his future coach?
"I talked to coach Weis a bunch of times over the weekend," McCarthy said. "I talked to him before and after I committed. It's exciting to know that he's had so much success. Look at what he's doing today. It's exciting to know that he's had success at the highest level, and he's bringing that knowledge and experience to Notre Dame.
