NOTRE DAME, IN (IE) According to the foremost expert on West Coast recruiting Greg Biggins of PacWestFootball.com Notre Dame may be making a serious late run at two of Californias top prospects.
Wide receiver Rhema McKnight, according to Biggins, has cancelled all at-home visits this week after being impressed by his weekend visit to Notre Dame.
Fred Matua, a 6-2, 277-pound defensive tackle, seemed set on Oklahoma a week ago. But a weekend in South Bend apparently turned his head also.
"I was kind of getting tired of this whole recruiting process, I was thinking (before last weekend) of just making my decision" Matua told Biggins. "The trip to Notre Dame put an end to that. Now I dont know what Im going to do."
Biggins is a member of TheInsiders.com stable of recruiting analysts. IrishEyes is part of TheInsiders network.
Monday, Notre Dame was ranked No. 18 in TheInsiders.coms poll of top recruiting classes to date. If the Irish were to sign McKnight and Matua, they would clearly vault into the top 10.
"A combination signing of McKnight and Maurice Stovall would be incredible," said Chris Pool of Pool Recruiting and TheInsiders.com.
Stovall, an outstanding receiver prospect from Pennsylvania, gave his verbal to Notre Dame on Monday. It has been reported today that McKnight also has verbally committed, but Biggins says that is not true.
McKnight had 62 receptions for 1,188 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. Biggins admires his body control and ability to make defenders miss in the open field.
