Jones Has Two Early Offers

Morgan Park high school in Chicago, Ill. is home to one of the Midwest's top quarterbacks, Demetrius Jones. The 6-3, 200-pound Jones can do it both on the ground and in the air. We spoke with Jones on Sunday night to get the early scoop on recruiting and found out he already has two impressive offers. Are the Irish in the race for this top prospect?

Quarterback Demetrius Jones had an outstanding junior season.

"I rushed for 1,100 yards and 17 touchdowns," said Jones. "I also passed for 2,300 yards and 25 touchdowns. I only threw two interceptions on the year."

Everyone in the Midwest appears to be interested in this top prospect.

"I have an offer from Illinois and an offer from Michigan," Jones said. "Notre Dame, Michigan State, Ohio State, Purdue, Texas Tech and Iowa are the main schools that are recruiting me the hardest right now."

Jones says he plans to have a busy few months over the next few months visiting college campuses.

"I went to Illinois yesterday for their junior day," he said. "I really liked it there. They're going to run the spread offense and that's what I'm used to running. That makes me take them into great consideration. They're one of my favorites right now.

"I'm also going to go to junior days at Purdue, Notre Dame and Michigan. I plan to stop by some spring practices and check out some of the teams practicing. I'll narrow it down to a top five, top three or so, and then I'll try to hit some of their camps to see if they're really interested in me as well."

The Irish appear to be one of his top teams at the moment.

"I like Notre Dame a lot," Jones said. "My family loves Notre Dame. I've talked to them before. They send me handwritten stuff all the time. They sent me information about their camps, and I'm going to their junior day on the 27th of this month.

"It's a solid program. They have a great tradition there. Once they get their new offense in there, I think they're going to get better.

"Their coach dominated everyone at the pro level, and now he's going to take that down to the college level. They also have a great quarterback coach. He has a great resume' of developing quarterbacks. You take that into consideration with the solid educational system and that makes me take them into great consideration."

We asked Jones what would be important to him when choosing a school.

"I think the history of the program will be important," Jones said. "I'll look at academics and graduation rates. I also think location will be important. I'm not really looking at too many schools outside of the BIG 10 region except Texas Tech, but that's because the run the spread."

Most top quarterbacks make early decisions. We asked Demetrius when he plans to decide.

"I think I'm going to wait it out," Jones said. "I don't want to commit and then change my mind. If I can find out where I want to go, I'll commit right then, but it has to be definite as to where I want to go."

Comments: Jones told me he had a 3.3 in his core and will be taking the test soon. The Irish are obviously very interested in Jones. He appears to have a strong interest in Notre Dame as well. He'll likely be one of their top targets when all is said and done.
