"I've had a lot of colleges contact me, at least thirty," said Keith McPherson. "The big schools that I like that have contacted me are Virginia, Virginia Tech, Iowa, Michigan, UConn, Rutgers, which is showing a lot interest, Northwestern, and Alabama."
Perhaps fueling each letter is each football coach's desire to sign a 6-2, 185 pound signal caller that can ran a 4.6 forty and make plays with both his arm and his feet. Last season, McPherson did this often and he helped guide Ocean Township to a 7-4 mark and a trip to the state playoffs.
"Our team went 7-4 last year," McPherson said. "We made it to the second round of the playoffs, but lost in the semi-finals. We did a lot better than last year because our team was mostly senior and junior orientated."
Next year McPherson will be called on to help guide Ocean back to the playoffs. He will be the "go to" man for points and a leader on a team that lost two talented running backs to graduation.
"I see my role on the team next year being the leader," he said. "Younger guys will look up at me, and I can see myself being the vocal and emotional leader. I'll also be the person the team will look to when we need points."
Under McPherson's leadership and athleticism, Ocean Township football is heading in the right direction, and being part of a team that's heading in the right direction is valued by McPherson. Many of the colleges that contacted McPherson are on their way to becoming one of the elite teams in college football. McPherson is interested in what these colleges have to offer.
"I'm interested in the teams that are heading in the right direction, the ones that are on their way up," said McPherson. "I've gotten some letters from established places, but most of the colleges contacting me are trying to build there program.<
"The colleges that have the shown the most interest are Virginia, Michigan, and Iowa. I get a lot of mail from these colleges and have been invited to junior day at each of them. Some of them I have talked to. They have their top twenty juniors call-in at a certain time and talk to one of the coaches. I've done that with some of them, and will do that with some others."
But there are some colleges McPherson hopes to hear from.
"I haven't received contact from USC, Miami, Texas, and Florida," he said. "The teams that are recruiting me are mostly in this area, but it would be nice to hear from them. Notre Dame has contacted me. I'd be interested in hearing more from them. I've only received a letter from them."
As McPherson continues to prepare for next season in the weight room, he is currently preparing for the SAT. He values academics and it will be one of determining factors in his college choice.
"Academics are the most important thing, them playing time, and then how I fit into the system," McPherson said. "I would say I am scrambling quarterback. We run the wing-t here and I like that offense and the spread offenses.
"I haven't taken the SAT yet, but I'm preparing to take it. I'll be taking it this spring."
