Andrew Phillips a 6-4, 275 pound offensive lineman from Georgetown Prep, North Bethesda (MD) made the trip to South Bend for Notre Dame's junior day. What were his impressions of the event? What coaches did he speak with? What change has he made to his summer plans?
Andrew Phillips traveled all the way from North Bethesda, MD for the recent junior day at Notre Dame, so we caught up with him to get his impressions of the event.
"On Saturday, my dad and I flew into Chicago and then drove over to South Bend," said Phillips. ‘We woke up on Sunday morning and walked around campus and saw a bunch of different things. We stopped at the grotto, and obviously the bookstore. You can't go Notre Dame without stopping at the bookstore, right?
"I had seen most of the campus in the past, but it was good just to walk around."
"After the general introduction, we had a chance to meet a number of the players. I met Victor Abiamiri, Brady Quinn, Anthony Fasano, Derek Curry, and John Sullivan – they all seemed pretty cool," said Phillips.
"I was pretty impressed when I found out that the vast majority of students at Notre Dame played a sport in high school, and that a great deal of them were captain of their high school team," continued Phillips. "I liked that, because it means you're going to school with people that you have a lot in common with."
I asked Phillips which coaches he spoke with and what he learned about the coaches.
"I met with coach Latina. When he was at Virginia Tech, he coached on of my coaches, coach Plank," explained Phillips. "Coach Plank had called coach Latina in the past and told him about me, so it was nice to get a chance to meet him."
"Coach Latina has the Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York area, so he'll be recruiting me. I liked him – he was really nice. He said that they planned on taking five or six offensive linemen in this class, since they hadn't taken many in the past."
I asked Phillips if he had a chance to speak with coach Weis.
"Yes, I did," said Phillips. "Coach Weis told everyone that they were looking for Notre Dame kids and that Notre Dame wasn't for everyone."
"I really liked what all the coaches talked about. It was family oriented and had a family atmosphere to it. The coaches had a no-nonsense approach and I liked that."
Comments: Andrew said that he didn't get a chance to talk about an offer with the coaches. He did speak with coach Latina about camp and it looks like Phillips will be attending Notre Dame's summer camp. Andrew also mentioned that his mom was disappointed that she didn't make the trip, but that they will likely be back to Notre Dame soon. I believe Phillips is a priority for this coaching staff so Irish Eyes will follow this situation closely.
