When Charlie Weis was hired as the head football coach at Notre Dame, he mentioned that he and his staff were going to make an effort to recruit the Chicago area very hard. Since the Irish are in dire need of talented offensive linemen, Neuqua Valley standout Timi Oshinowo (6-7, 280 pounds) is probably a very good place for the new staff to start.
Standing in Notre Dame's way, may be the Stanford Cardinal. Oshinowo's older brother is a defensive tackle at Stanford, so Timi obviously has great interest in that program. Since his brother plays for Stanford, Timi has been to Notre Dame in the past to watch the Cardinal battle the Irish, including last year's 23-16 Irish victory. His most recent trip was more business as he went to get a more in depth look of Notre Dame during it's junior day on February 27th.
"The junior day went really well," explained Oshinowo. "Coach Latina sat next to me almost the entire second half of the basketball game, so I really had an opportunity to talk to him and get to know him. We basically talked about the program, their lifting and their plans for the program."
"I really liked coach Latina. He's a very good guy – personable. He talked about going to watch his offensive lineman from Ole Miss at the NFL combine. That really impressed me. It shows you that he really cares about his players.
"I really liked Coach Weis as well," continued Oshinowo. "I thought he was really funny. I liked how he addressed the crowd at halftime of the game."
"He just seems like a good guy – authentic. When you talk to him you can tell he's very experienced and that's he's one of the best coaches out there -- I was like, ‘Wow! He really knows his stuff.'
As expected, all the schools in the Midwest are recruiting Oshinowo, although Wisconsin, Illinois, Northwestern, Iowa, Michigan and Notre Dame are the schools that interest him the most. From the west, he's obviously considering Stanford and Greg Mattison is recruiting him from Florida.
"Right now, I'm really trying to sort things out." Oshinowo said when asked if he had a favorite at this time.
Comments: Oshinowo is getting a lot of recruiting attention right now, and although his brother plays at Stanford, Timi was quick to point out that it doesn't give the Cardinal an edge. Since his brother went through the recruiting process a couple years ago, he has a feel for what he needs to do in order to find the right school. I believe him when he says he's considering everyone.
