Oklahoma Athlete Has Irish Offer

There's a buzz about Oklahoma City, Okla. athlete George West. West only has two offers so far, but plenty of schools are recruiting this top athlete and we expect many more offers will be on the way for West. The Irish have thrown their hat into the ring, and we spoke with West this week to find out his thought on Notre Dame and his plans for recruiting. Do the Irish have a shot at West?

Two-player George West showed his versatility during his junior season by putting up some impressive numbers on both sides of the ball.

"Most schools are recruiting to play either wide receiver or corner," West said. "I had 809 yards and 45 receptions and 10 touchdowns on offense. I also had 5 rushing attempts for 101 yards and a touchdown. On defensive I had 36 tackles and nine interceptions."

So far two schools have offered West and plenty more are interested.

"Notre Dame and Iowa State have offered me," West said. "Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Kansas State, Kansas, Stanford and Arkansas are also recruiting me pretty hard."

The Northeast high school star said the Irish offer wasn't expected.

"That really surprised me," West said of the Irish offer. "They showed that they were really interested. It came kind of fast.

"I've spoken with coach Weis. He told me that I was the kind of player he really wanted. He's a really nice guy.

"We talked about their offense and what they plan to do there. We talked about how I would fit in there. He talked about a Z receiver where I worked a lot on underneath routes, but I also would stretch the field deep."

We asked West what most coaches say they like about his film.

"They all talk about my explosiveness," he said. "I can get moving pretty fast. They talk about my elusiveness in the open field. They say I have natural instincts to get the extra yards and find the end zone."

Living in Oklahoma, we asked West if he grew up a fan of the Sooners or the Cowboys.

"I grew up liking Oklahoma State," West said. "They're recruiting me pretty hard."

West also said he knew what he was looking for when looking at schools.

"Education is the first thing," the Irish prospect said. "What I can do with the degree after I graduate will be very important.

"I'll also look at the relationships I have with the coaches and the surroundings and how comfortable I feel at the school.

"I don't think I'll decide until I take my visits. I want to see the schools and then see what my parents think of the situation at each school."

West also says he plans to have a busy summer.

"I'm going to try to take some unofficial visits this summer," he said. "I can go to Oklahoma and Oklahoma State pretty easily. I want to check out some of these schools that are a little farther away. Texas Tech, Iowa State and Notre Dame are some of the schools I'll try to go see this summer."
