Maryland, Boston College, Virginia, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Carolina State, Michigan State, and Virginia Tech have already offered Kates a scholarship, so the recent offer by the Irish is just one of many.
"I first started getting interested in Notre Dame when coach Willingham was recruiting Jamie Thomas," explained Jason Kates. "The new staff didn't miss a beat in recruiting me. I get something everyday from Notre Dame. They say that I'm one of their most important recruits."
Kates certainly is a priority along the defensive line, as he was the first defensive tackle to be offered. Nonetheless, Jason has a lot of schools chasing him. How much interest does he have in Notre Dame?
"They're up there. We'll see when I take my unofficial there in the summer," responded Kates. "I'll probably take 2-3 day trip there like Zach Frazer did. I was surprised that he committed this early. (There) Must be something up there pretty amazing, so I'll take a look."
Kates did confirm that the Irish were recruiting him for the defensive side of the ball, and that coach Latina was someone he has already had a chance to speak with.
When it comes to making a decision, Kates will take his time. He said he is looking at everyone right now. If he were to schedule his official visits today would ND get a visit?
"Most likely," he replied. "My mom really likes Notre Dame, but I'm wide open. I'm considering everybody."
Comments: The Irish coaching staff took it's time before they offered any defensive tackles, so the offer to Kates must indicate that they have decided that he is one of their top targets. It's a great sign that he is planning on making a trip over the summer. It also doesn't hurt that his mom likes Notre Dame. We'll check back with Kates soon to see when he plans to visit South Bend.
